Today is National Inane Answering Message Day, as well as the anniversary of the Beatles' Last Public Appearance (1969), the anniversary of the day Gandhi was assassinated (1948), and the anniversary of the First Brawl in the US House of Representatives (1798). During an argument between Matthew Lyon of Vermont and Roger Griswold of Connecticut, Lyon spat in Griswold's face.  A resolution to expel Lyon was introduced, but the measure failed and Lyon kept his seat.

Wednesday is the anniversary of the day in 1940 when May Fuller of Ludlow, VT, received the First Social Security Check.  Ms Fuller had worked for three years under the Social Security Program, and her first monthly check was for $22.54.  She lived to be 100 years old, collection $22,888 in benefits.

Thursday marks the anniversary of the First Session of the Supreme Court (1790).  Friday is Groundhog Day, and if Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow, we're in for six more weeks of winter.  And, as if that thought weren't gloomy enough, Saturday is the anniversary of the ratification of the 16thAmendment (1913), granting Congress the authority to levy taxes on income.  According to all accounts, no church bells rang and no dancing in the streets was reported.

WHAT'S HAPPENING?

At Wednesday's 10:00 a.m. and 3:30 story times, participants will learn about elephants in stories and crafts.  Saturday morning's 10:00 story time features an owl story and craft time.

BOOK TALK

The library's Lee Harbach provides this week's book information.  This is the time of year when people wish they were somewhere else.  The library is a great place to come to get away by reading about the adventures others have had in their efforts to visit or live in far away places.  One of the newest is set in the Caribbean on a small island called Anguilla.  Melinda and Robert Blanchard have written "A Trip to the Beach."  Their efforts to build a restaurant on this island meet with unusual obstacles as they try to fit into their new environment.  The authors' wonderfully descriptive writing style reads like a novel, and their deep love for the place and the people makes us wish we could join them on the beach.

If beaches aren't your thing, the library has many books about lovely locales to choose from.  "A Garden in Lucca" and "Bella Tuscany" tell of the beauty of Italy, while France is represented by "Encore Provence," "A Cat Abroad" (on Audio-cassette), and "The Magic of Provence."  Australia is depicted in "Cold Beer and Crocodiles" and "In a Sunburned Country," and our latest book about Mexico is called "On Mexican Time."

If you're thinking of taking a road trip, our new children's assistant, Margaret Baca, suggest you let the kids do the planning.  There are many excellent guides to New Mexico sites written with children in mind.  "The Children's Guide to Santa Fe" by Anne Hillerman offers several interesting places to visit, not only in the city, but in surrounding areas as well, pointing out sites for hiking and fishing. It also includes a guide to the many celebrations that Santa Fe has to offer.  "Kidding Around- the National Parks of the Southwest" by Sarah Lovert talks about the many natural wonders the state possesses and includes specific activities and tips for preparation for each site so that you and your family can be ready for a wonderful trip together.

DID YOU KNOW?

According to a study by international marketing information company, The NPD Group, eating habits haven't changed much.  Today, nearly three out of four evening meals are eaten at home - the same percentage as 15 years ago.  Ten percent of home meals are frozen entrees, and seven percent are take-home restaurant meals.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK:  "An optimist thinks that this is the best possible world.  A pessimist fears that this is true.  (unknown)
