Welcome to Universal Letter Writing Week, which encourages people all over
the world to get the new year off to a good start by sending letters and cards
to friends everywhere!
This is also International Thank You Days, a week of time to thank
someone from your past or present who did something nice for you.
If you really don’t want to write a letter, you can call, fax, or
e-mail!
Wednesday
is National Clean-Off-Your-Desk Day, to provide at least one day in the year for
all desk workers to see the top of their desks and prepare for the new year’s
paperwork.
Friday
is National Handwriting Day, which is popularly observed on the birthday of John
Hancock (1737-1793), whose conspicuous signature on the Declaration of
Independence has made his name a part of the American language.
The day is set aside to encourage more legible handwriting. WHAT'S
HAPPENING? Join
the fun and excitement of Grand Opening Day for the Roswell Public Library
Children’s Branch at 316 N. Richardson. The
10:00 a.m. Wednesday story time features Balloons, Bubbles, and Books.
Children will receive a free mini-book bag, bookmark, balloon, and a
bubble ring, while supplies last. The
fun continues with a gala Grand Opening Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at 4:00 p.m. We’ll
finish the week with story times at 10:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, with a
Frog Story and Craft Time; Friday, with Clown stories and crafts; and Saturday,
with Polar Bear stories and crafts. BOOK
TALK Children’s
Librarian Mary Stickford provides this week’s book information.
You can make everyday a celebration with “Activities for Special Days
Throughout the Year: Kids Celebrate! – Great Ideas for Helen Keller’s
birthday, Space Week, Chinese New Year, Peace Day, and More.”
The
title only hints at the 300 pages of activities for special days, month by
month, for a whole year, complete with recipes, materials lists, and
supplemental suggestions to help you make every day a special day. Similar
titles include: “Celebrate October: Literature-based Activities for Holidays
and Special Days,” “The Kid’s Catalog of Jewish Holidays,” and “52
Ideas for Special Days: Easy-to-do Activities for Ages 3-12.” Adults
will enjoy “Close to the Wind,” a story about ocean sailing and racing.
It begins as author Pete Goss, a 24-year-old British Royal Marine, sails
his first transatlantic race, and continues over the next ten years as he
prepares himself for the ultimate solo challenge, a non-stop single-handed
round-the-world yacht race. You can learn more about his adventures, including
photos and future ocean racing plans, at the author’s website: www.petegoss.com. DID
YOU KNOW?
Since
these are International Thank You Days, we want to take this opportunity to
express our gratitude to some very special people.
First, thanks go to the Bank of America for donating the shelves that we
are using at the new Children’s branch. Another
big thanks goes to Finishing Touches, for the materials they supply for
children’s crafts all year long. Next,
we want to thank the Friends of the Roswell Public Library for their on-going
support. Finally, we want to thank
our patrons for their patience and good humor as we expand the library. THOUGHT
FOR THE WEEK: “Did you ever
notice that people never tell you nice things ‘for your own good’?”
