Welcome to "It's About Time!" Week, a week dedicated to time-to-give, time-to-live, and time-to-treasure. Today is National Whiner's Day, devoted to whiners, especially those who return Christmas gifts and need lots of attention. People are encouraged to be happy about what they have to do, rather than unhappy about what they don't have. Friday is the anniversary of the day in 1851 when the first YMCA (Young Men's Christian Association) was organized in Boston. It was modeled after an organization begun in London in 1844. Sunday is New Year's Eve, as well as Make Up Your Mind Day. Make a decision and stick to it, a perfect day to make those New Year's resolutions! WHAT'S HAPPENING? Be sure to catch up on the construction progress as you visit the library this week. And remember that the children's collection has been moved to 316 North Richardson, and children's programming will resume on January 10, with the Grand Opening of the temporary library annex. BOOK TALK Margaret Chittenden has added a fourth book to her very entertaining Charlie Plato mystery series. The latest title is "Dying to See You." This is a very entertaining book with some excitement and a few surprises. Each of the books in the series reveals a little more about the personal history and developing relationships of the main characters while they try to follow the clues and solve the mystery. Several authors have new titles that have just been added to our mystery collection. Diane Mott Davidson's latest is "Tough Cookie." Anne George continues the story of her two sisters with "Murder Carries a Torch," while Charlaine Harris adds a few surprises with her latest called "Shakespeare's Trollop." A recent addition to the ranks of these writers is Janis Harrison. She has written her second book called "Murder Sets Seed." She has a likeable amateur sleuth and an interesting setting with plenty of mystery and excitement to keep you entertained. DID YOU KNOW? According to Barbara Axelson in "Home Office Computing," the library can beat the Web for research on many business topics. The Web's convenience should be balanced against the amount of time needed to do a thorough search for information. In fact, libraries can do much better when you want printed directories and other materials, such as companies' annual reports; local information, such as state and city demographics; training assistance; meeting rooms for quiet research or talks with clients; or teleconferencing facilities for virtual meetings and distance learning. If you're planning to do some upkeep on your house after the holidays, here's a tip from "Today's Homeowner." Catch paint drips while painting overhead with a brush by wrapping a soft cotton cloth around the metal ferrule of the brush. Hold the cloth on with a rubber band. Be sure the cloth does not touch the bristles. Paint will drip onto the cloth - not the floor- while you paint the ceiling or other high spots. THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: "Learn to take things as they come, and don't hold on to them as they go." (unknown) JUDY ARMSTRONG, 624-7276
