Welcome to Tell Someone They're Doing a Good Job Week. Every day this week, take the time to compliment someone on their work! Thursday is the anniversary of the First Crossword Puzzle, which was compiled by Arthur Wynne and published in the "New York World" in 1913. Thursday is also Humbug Day, which allows all of us preparing for Christmas to vent our frustrations with 12 "bah humbugs." Sunday, of course, is Christmas Eve and Monday is Christmas. The library will be closed, but the entire staff of your Roswell Public Library wishes you and yours a very Merry Christmas! WHAT'S HAPPENING? Be sure to catch up on the construction progress as you visit the library this week. And remember that the children's collection has been moved to 316 North Richardson, and children's programming will resume on January 10, with the Grand Opening of the temporary library annex. BOOK TALK Librarian Barbara Harris provides this week's book information. If the expansion of the Library has emboldened you to consider fixing up your own place, we of course have remodeling books that will tell you how to do almost anything you need to do. Don't forget, however, that we have much more than just books. Magazines are a great source of remodeling ideas and instructions. The Library subscribes to "Better Homes and Gardens," "The Family Handyman," "Mother Earth News," "Sunset," "Today's Homeowner," and "Workbench." Most magazines can be checked out after they are two months old. Watching a video can be almost as instructive as having a professional at your side. Check out the "This Old House" home improvement video or Dean Johnson's "Quicksteps" if you like the remodeling programs on public television. Other topics covered by the Library's videos include framing walls, floors, and stairs; installing kitchen cabinets; and tiling wall and floors. The Internet has a number of good Web sites to help plan and carry out remodeling projects. Use your home computer of the Library's public computers to look at www.remodeling.hw.net, www.eplans.com, www.cbuild.com, www.dreamremodeling.com, www.kitchen-bath.com, www.homestore.com, and www.homeabc.com. DID YOU KNOW? If you're looking for a last minute idea for Christmas dinner or for help in preparing a delightful meal, try one of these websites. You can reach the on-line magazine, "Electronic Gourmet Guide" at www.globalgourmet.com, or the site for "Bon Appetit" and "Gourmet" at www.epicurious.com. For recipes from famous chefs, such as Paul Prudhomme and Julia Child, try www.starchefs.com. Food associations also have great sites for advice and recipes: www.nppc.org is the National Pork Producers Council; www.eatchicken.com, for chicken; and www.usapears.com, which has especially good recipes for children. The site www.ucook.com has a database of cookbooks that you can search for recipes by ingredient, region or preparation time. Cost is just 99 cents per recipe. THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: "Bitterness is like drinking poison and waiting for the other person to die." (unknown) JUDY ARMSTRONG, 624-7276
