Welcome to Recipe Greetings for the Holidays, a week in which to send recipes as great greetings! Today is Poinsettia Day, a day to enjoy the beautiful plant that has become synonymous with Christmas and the American diplomat who introduced it to the United States, Dr. Joel Poinsett. Interestingly, this tidbit of information was a high-dollar question on a recent "Who Wants to Be A Millionaire" show. Today is also Ding-a-Ling day, which honors handball players around the world.

Friday is Underdog Day, which salutes the unsung heroes and Number Two people who contribute so much to the Number One people we read about. Sunday is the anniversary of the First Powered Flight by Orville and Wilbur Wright in 1903, which marked the beginning of a new form of transportation.

WHAT'S HAPPENING?

The library is open for business as usual - or almost as usual. The staff has moved and condensed the book sections so that you will continue to have access to information and computers during the first phase of the renovation.

The children's collection has been moved to 316 North Richardson, and children's programming will resume on January 10, with the Grand Opening of the temporary library annex.

BOOK TALK

Librarian Loretta Clark provides this week's book information. Libraries are books, but in today's world, more than books. Computers and Internet access in libraries now supplement the traditional print sources of information. Your Roswell Public Library is fortunate to have several databases that provide a wide variety of information from magazines, newspapers, and other print sources. The New Mexico State Library provides three of these databases to public, school, and academic libraries in the state. These databases provide access to information that the library might not be able to afford or not have room enough for all of the shelves needed to hold all of the materials in print form.

"Business Source Elite" offers coverage from over 960 journals on such topics as accounting, banking, finance, international business, sales, management, marketing, real estate, regional studies, trade, and technology. It contains charts and graphs, as well as company records from Dunn and Bradstreet. "Health Reference Center" provides health information designed specifically for lay reader research. It integrates medical journals, consumer health magazines, newsletters, books, and newspapers. "Proquest Direct" covers general information that will satisfy the information needs of all kinds of users.

The library's reference area has many books containing Web sites. They must be used in the library and include "Web Site Source Book," "Web Sites to Find Your Next Job," "Automotive Web Sites," and "US Government On the Web."

The computers in the library may be used once per day for one hour on a first-come, first-served basis. Printing is 15 cents per page. Come by the library, 301 North Pennsylvania, and pick up a brochure of on-line sources of information available and expand your horizons!
