The month of December starts this Friday, bringing with it Bingo's Birthday Month (1929), International Calendar Awareness Month, National Stress-Free Holidays Month, and Safe Toys and Gifts Month.

Thursday is Computer Security Day, which reminds people to protect (and backup) their computers at home and work. Friday marks the anniversary of the day in 1891 when physical education teacher James Naismith created basketball. To create an indoor sport that could be played during the winter months, he nailed up peach baskets at opposite ends of the YMCA gym and gave students soccer balls to toss into them.

WHAT'S HAPPENING?

The library will be closed November 27 through December 5 to move the children's collection to our new temporary branch and to rearrange the rest of the library collection for public access during the first phase of construction. Construction will start soon after the move. Unfortunately, we will not be able to have any children's programming during December. However, we hope to keep your library open for business as usual (at least close to usual) during most of the construction period. We'll use this space each week to keep you updated on construction progress!

You're joyfully and gratefully invited to attend the gala groundbreaking ceremony at the library at 4:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 6.

BOOK TALK

Librarian Barbara Harris provides this week's book information. It isn't enough that every group you belong to expects you to bring cookies to the December meeting: now they want you to give the program! Let the Library relieve at least this one anxiety with holiday lore, stories, poems, videos, and music.

We have collections of Christmas, Chanukah, and Kwanzaa stories for all ages. You'll find traditional favorites as well as the works of contemporary authors. Christmas poetry ranges from moving religious verse to the "Cajun Night Before Christmas." Our many books about the history of the holidays and how they are celebrated in other countries are another source for program material. Check out our holiday craft books if your group is the "hands-on" type.

You can check out cassettes and CDs of holiday music from Baroque to electronic, as well as recordings of Christmas stories being read aloud. If you are musically inclined, we have holiday songbooks you can use as you accompany your group on the piano or guitar. We have many holiday videos (most for children), but be sure they have public performance rights before you show them to a group.

Finally, a member of the Library staff would be delighted to provide a program for your group in December or any other month. Just give us a call at 622-7101.

DID YOU KNOW?

If you're going to do some career networking at all those holiday parties you're attending, here are some tips from Jacqueline Whitmore, founder of the Protocol School. When attending a large gathering, eat beforehand so you are in no hurry to go to the bar or buffet. Pause briefly after entering the room so others see you, and then approach people you do not know.

Talk to people standing alone or in groups of three or more; it's hard to break into a two-person conversation. Hold your glass in your left hand so that you can shake hands with your right, and focus on the person to whom you are talking, not on yourself. After talking to someone, move away gracefully with a smile and a thank you.
