Welcome to American Education Week, which focuses attention on the importance of education and all that it stands for, and National Geography Awareness Week. You can visit the National Geographic Society's website at www.nationalgeographic.com.

Today is National American Teddy Bear Day, celebrating the birth of America's most beloved companion. Legend has it that President Theodore Roosevelt spared the life of a bear cub while on a big game hunt in Mississippi in 1902. Political cartoonist Clifford Berryman recorded the incident. From then on, the President was most often depicted alongside a Teddy Bear, and thus America's love affair with the Teddy Bear began!

Friday is Homemade Bread Day, Saturday is the anniversary of the US Uniform Time Zone Plan (1883), and Sunday is the anniversary of the First Presidential Library, for which President Franklin D. Roosevelt laid the cornerstone on November 19, 1939.

WHAT'S HAPPENING?

Wednesday's 10:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. story times feature porcupines in stories and crafts, and participants will wear a porcupine mask and decorate a precut porcupine. At Saturday morning's 10:00 a.m. feet story time, participants will make shoe stick puppets and big foot pom-pom critters.

BOOK TALK

Librarian Rosie Klopfer provides this week's timely book information. New occupants will be moving into the big white house on Pennsylvania Avenue soon. The following books may make you laugh or cry depending on your views of this historical house. In "The Incumbent," By Brian McGrory, assassination, ambition, and human relationships add to the suspense. "Run," by Stewart Woods, combines political conspiracy, murder, and relationships on the campaign trail. Other campaign stories include "Tuesday Man," by David Daniel; "Hank Harrison For President," by Fred Eckert; and "Final Addition," by Richard Condon, to name a few. Elliott Roosevelt has written many mystery books with Eleanor Roosevelt as the main character. She is an amateur detective and usually has to answer to the president during her investigating. "Murder In The: Red Room," "...The Pantry," "...The Executive Mansion," "...The Rose Garden," etc. are delightful tales of the White House and the trouble people can get into while being there.

"Murder In The White House," By Margaret Truman, was the first mystery in her Washington D.C. series. "White House Connection" and "The President's Daughter," by Jack Higgins, and "Backstairs At The White House," By Gwen Bagni, are also good reads. "The Kid Who Ran For President," by Dan Gutman, is about a twelve-year-old boy who is running for President of the United States.

DID YOU KNOW?

According to researchers at the Loma Linda University School of Medicine, laughter IS good for you. Half of a group of 48 heart attack survivors watched a comedy of their choice for 30 minutes a day for one year. The other half did not watch anything funny. Only two of the comedy watchers had repeat heart attacks within 12 months, compared with 10 who did not watch comedy. A possible reason is that laughter lowers levels of stress hormones epinephrine and norepinephrine and may help restore the brain chemicals that help us deal better with stress.

You can slow the spread of colds by cleaning surfaces that people touch -- such as doorknobs, telephone handsets, faucets, and refrigerator doors -- throughout the day. Wipe the surfaces with a mild detergent, glass cleaner, or diluted bleach solution.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: "The most utterly lost of all days is that in which you have not laughed even once." (unknown)
