Welcome to National Chemistry Week, National Split Pea Soup Week, Pursuit of Happiness Week, and Random Acts of Kindness Week, which anyone can celebrate any day of the year! Today is General Election Day, so don't forget to vote! Wednesday is Cook Something Bold and Pungent Day, which means that sauerkraut and garlic are in order. Wednesday is also National Young Reader's Day. Friday is the 225th anniversary of the Marine Corps, which became a separate unit (originally part of the Navy) on July 11, 1789. Saturday is Veterans Day and WWI Armistice Day. Saturday is also the anniversary of the day in 1938 when "God Bless America" was first sung. Written by Irving Berlin especially for Kate Smith, the song soon became a patriotic favorite. WHAT'S HAPPENING? Wednesday's 10:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. story times feature trains in stories and crafts, and participants will make a mural with precut train cars. At Saturday morning's 10:00 a.m. Native American story time, participants will use rubber stamps to make rock art, make a headdress of colorful precut feathers, and use tinted sand to make sand paintings. BOOK TALK Librarian Barbara Harris provides this week's book information. If cooler weather, the flu season, or your own inclinations have made you a couch potato, the Library has books to improve the quality of your cocooning. If you've read everything by your favorite author or just want to vary your reading a bit, check out "The Salon.com Reader's Guide to Contemporary Authors." If you'd like to try some of the "classic" books you'd always meant to read, consult "Vintage Reading" or "The New Lifetime Reading Plan." "About the Author" gives information about 125 favorite fiction writers, including relevant Web sites and suggestions for similar books. If you'd like to wander more purposefully through the video store, let "The New York Times Guide to the Best 1,000 Movies Ever Made" or "The Entertainment Weekly Guide to the Greatest Movies Ever Made" be your guide. In "Peter Bogdanovich's Movie of the Week," the famous director selects 52 movies to provide a full year of cinematic excellence. Critic Danny Peary identifies the movies and actors he thinks were really the best in "Alternate Oscars." The Library also has books to guide your listening. Pop, rock, jazz, alternative, rap, folk, blues, world, soul, and country musicians selected their favorite artists and recordings for "Listen to This," but their choices include other types of music. "The World Music CD Listener's Guide" will expand your musical horizons. Albums and tapes as well as CD's are listed in the "All Music Guide to Jazz." DID YOU KNOW? Here are some tips for pet owners. If your cat gets lost, immediately search your home for places it may be trapped. Look outdoors behind shrubbery, under gratings, under your car. Put the litter box outside, plus a piece of clothing you recently wore. Post flyers on utility poles, at grocery stores and in other places where many people will see them. Visit vets, groomers, and pet-supply stores, as well as the animal shelters. If someone claims to have found your cat, agree to meet him/her in public, and bring a friend along if possible. Remember to stand upright when commanding a dog. Dogs rely as much on body language as on the spoken word, so they may ignore a command given while you're in an "inferior" position. Also, dogs learn by association. If you normally command them while standing, they might not understand the same command given while you're in a chair or lying on the floor. THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: "Change before you have to." (Jack Welch, CEO, General Electric) JUDY ARMSTRONG, 624-7276
