Hope you are ready for November because it's here, bringing with it Aviation History Month, International Drum Month, National Adoption Month, National Family Caregivers Month, National Lifewriting Month, National Sleep Comfort Month, and Peanut Butter Lovers' Month. Today is the anniversary of the completion of Mount Rushmore in 1941, after 14 years of work. Wednesday is National Authors' Day, National Family Literacy Day, and the anniversary of the invention of the hockey mask in 1959. Thursday is the 80th anniversary of the first scheduled radio broadcast (results of the Presidential election) in 1920. Thursday is also National Men Make Dinner Day (no barbecues allowed) and Plan Your Epitaph Day, dedicated to the proposition that a forgettable gravestone is a fate worse than death. Friday is Sandwich Day, the birth anniversary of John Montague (1718-1792), who is said to have invented the sandwich as a time-saving nourishment while engaged in a 24-hour-long gambling session in 1762. Monday, believe it or not, is the halfway point of autumn! WHAT'S HAPPENING? Wednesday's 10:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. story times feature autumn in stories, and crafts include a crown and mobile to decorate with colorful precut leaves. At Saturday morning's 10:00 a.m. elephant story time, participants will assemble an elephant paper bag puppet and decorate a precut elephant mask. BOOK TALK Librarian Loretta Clark provides this week's "colorful" book information. The colors of fall leaves and the colors of springtime blossoms and flowers are part of the joy of nature. Colors enrich our lives and send signals both subtle and complex. "Colorsmart: How To Use Color To Enhance Your Business And Personal Life is an easy to read book that will aid readers in discovering their own color personality profile, whether it is color-forward, color-prudent, or color-loyal. Mimi Cooper has presented her innovative insights to many Fortune 500 companies, but these insights are just as effective for small businesses and individuals. Other books on the psychology of color are "Color Your Future: Using The Color Code To Strengthen Your Character" and "The Color Code: A New Way To See Yourself, Your Relationships And Life" by Dr. Taylor Hartman. Since much of life is spent in our own homes, it is important to use colors that "speak" to us and that reflect our own personalities. "Colors For Your Every Mood: Discover Your True Decorating Colors" combines the emotional meaning of color with a practical how-to and reveals which colors and color combinations will achieve the feeling personal style you want to project in each and every room. A first book for children on the psychology of color is "Colors, Words, Pictures." It tells of the beautiful burgeoning of burgundy, the sorrow of olive, the silliness of orange and the pomp of purple. It is a word jazz that lets children and adults in on colors' quirks.
