What a week you have in store for you, for this is Fire Prevention Week, Home-Based Business Week, National Metric Week, National School Lunch Week, National Wildlife Week, and National Pet Peeve Week. Today is National Bring Your Teddy Bear To Work Day, celebrating the help, stress relief, and joy that teddy bears bring into the lives of people of all ages and stages!

If your teddy bear doesn't handle all of your stress, then plan to celebrate International Moment of Frustration Scream Day, which invites us to get rid of our frustrations by going outside at twelve hundred hours Greenwich time and scream for 30 seconds.

Friday is Blame Someone Else Day, and it's also a Friday the Thirteenth, the only one in the year 2000. Every year has at least one Friday the thirteenth, but never more than three. Fear of the number thirteen, by the way, is called triskaidekaphobia.

Saturday is Be Bald and Be Free Day, Sunday is My Mom Is A Student Day and National Grouch Day, and Monday is Dictionary Day, celebrated on the birthday of American teacher and lexicographer Noah Webster (1758-1843), whose name became synonymous with the word "dictionary."

WHAT'S HAPPENING?

At Wednesday's 10:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. story times, participants will hear stories about cats and make a cat wall hanging. At Saturday morning's 10:00 Rocketry story time, participants will see a stick puppet play, perform an action rhyme, and make a moon and stars box.

Mark your calendars now for the annual Altrusa/Friends of the Library Book Sale, October 18-21. At Friday night's preview sale, Friends of the Library members are admitted free. On Sunday, you can buy a bag of books for just $2!

You'll also want to make your reservations now for a fun-filled evening featuring appetizers, dinner, door prizes, and the premier performance of "Aliens in Transylvania," written by Frank Schlatter and performed by members of the Roswell Community Little Theater. The fun begins at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, October 27, at the library. Cost is just $40 per person, and reservations can be made at the library.

BOOK TALK

Children's Librarian Mary Stickford provides this week's book information. Join in the celebration of Robert H. Goddard Days, October 11-14, by attending a Science and Discovery Festival at the Roswell Civic Center, doing some reading on your own, or by enjoying a program about Goddard at the Library.

If you decide to read, you'll find many books at the Library to help you with research on Robert H. Goddard, including "Great Scientists" by Sherrow, "Twentieth-Century Inventors" by Aaseng, "Robert Hutchings Goddard" by Coil, "Robert H. Goddard" by Farley, and "Rocket Man: Robert Goddard". These and others are available at the Reference Desk for use in the Library.

Teachers who would like to book an entertaining and enlightening program about Goddard and rockets can call Mary at the Library at 622-7101 to schedule a special performance of the program, which will be offered to the public at story time on October 14 at 10:00 a.m.

DID YOU KNOW?

According to Scott Gaidano, cofounder of DriveSavers data recovery specialists, we should never leave our laptop in a hot - or cold - car. Extreme temperatures can ruin it. If it does become overheated or too cold, bring it inside as soon as possible. Give it several hours to come to room temperature before you try to open or use it. Also, place a laptop well away from car audio speakers, and of course, back up your laptop daily. You can find out more at the company's website, www.drivers.com

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: "Did you hear about the new restaurant on the moon? Great food but no atmosphere." (unknown)
