Welcome to International Housekeepers Week, National Assisted Living Week, National Brainstorming Week, and National 5-A-Day Week, which encourages us to increase the amount of fruits and vegetables we eat to five or more servings a day. Wednesday is the anniversary of the night in 1814 when Francis Scott Key was inspired to write the verses that, coupled with the tune of a popular drinking song, became our official national anthem in 1931.

Friday is "Someday." You know all of those things you’re going to do "some day" – lose weight, start a business, begin an exercise program? Well someday is here, so start tackling those new challenges now!

This week also marks the 18th anniversary of the Library Topics column. We appreciate all of the people who have helped to write and publish the 936 columns that have appeared in the Roswell Daily Record every week since 1982!

WHAT'S HAPPENING?

At Wednesday's 10:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. story times, participants will hear chicken stories and make a hen and chicks collage. Saturday morning’s 10:00 story time celebrates features dog stories, and participants will make a dog stick puppet, a dog bone necklace, and a dog mask.

BOOK TALK

Librarian Barbara Harris provides this week’s book information. Although the school year has just begun, it’s not too soon for high school juniors and seniors to be thinking about college. The library has many guides to colleges and universities and to selecting careers and majors; study guides for ACT, SAT, CLEP, and GRE exams; and books to advise students and parents about everything from financial aid to dealing with living away from home. Adult students, in particular, will want to look at the recent books on distance learning – taking courses by correspondence or online. Most directories of scholarships and other financial aid are in the reference collection, as are guides to technical and vocational schools.

The Internet on your home or school computer or on one of the library’s public computers is also a rich source of college information. Use the term "college entrance" on your browser to explore these resources. When deciding which college or financial aid information site to use, consider the reputation and qualifications of the company hosting the site, whether the site includes the full range of schools (or just those that have paid to be included), and whether you are willing to receive the advertising you may get if you register with the site. Almost every college has its own web site with a wide range of information, and many make it possible to apply online. The web site for ENMU-Roswell can be found at www.roswell.enmu.edu.

When making the important decision about college, it’s good to know that in addition to parents, teachers, and counselors, the library has many resources and librarians trained to help you use them!

DID YOU KNOW?

According to researchers at Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health, teenage motorists are in greater danger when they carry more passengers. The more people in a car, the more change a young driver will die in a crash. For example, a 16-year-old with one passenger is 39% more likely to get killed than one driving alone. With two passengers, that increases to 86% and jumps to 182% with three or more passengers.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: "The shortest known unit is the time between the change of the traffic light and the honk from the car behind you." (unknown)
