Welcome to National Friendship Week, a celebration of the people, by the people, and for the people. This event calls people to revitalize friendship with God on Sunday, spouses on Monday, children on Tuesday, family on Wednesday, friends on Thursday, co-workers on Friday, and neighbors on Saturday. Today is Be An Angel Day, a day to be a blessing in someone’s life by doing "one small act of service for someone." Friday is Kiss-And-Make-Up-Day, a day to make amends in any relationship that needs mending. Saturday is Make Your Own Luck Day, which reminds us that the welcome mat is always out at the door to opportunity. Sunday is the anniversary of the day in 1859 when W.A. "Uncle Billy" Smith struck the first commercial oil well. Monday is Race Your Mouse Around the Icons Day. Instead of sitting idly by, waiting for any number of endless items to finally come up on your computer screen, you’ll feel peppier if you race your mouse in and around the icons. WHAT'S HAPPENING? At Wednesday's 10:00 a.m. story time, participants will join Amie Green from the Chaves County Extension Office to learn about health, hygiene, and germ fighting, and they’ll make a germ craft. Participants at Wednesday’s 3:30 p.m. story time will see a puppet play, make a skunk pup-up card, wear a skunk mask, and make a bookmark with skunk tracks. The program for this Friday’s Adult Summer Reading Program features rubber stamp art. Each of the 50 pre-registered participants will receive a goodie bag of die cut items to use to make take-home creations using a variety of materials, including rubber stamps, buttons, pearls, seashells, ribbon, lace, and more. Saturday morning's 10:00 story time features rubber stamp art for kids, who will use rubber stamps to decorate a book. BOOK TALK Librarian Mary Beth Wright provides this week's book information. It’s back-to-school time, whether you attend public, private, or home school. If you have decided to try home schooling this year, "The Homeschool Manual" by Theodore Wade, Jr. and Others is a treasure trove of plans, pointers, reasons, and resources. With Wade’s book in hand, you’ll want to connect with another book to introduce homeschooling, Patrick Farenga’s "The Beginner’s Guide to Homeschooling." This book gives an overview of what homeschooling is like, who does it, how it works, and what is needed to get started. If an activity guide filled with innovative ideas is needed, Anna Kealoha presents alternative learning methods in "Trust the Children." "Practical Homeschooling" and "Home Education" are magazines that address the current trends in homeschooling. For homework ideas, Walter Minkel offers a superabundance of Web resources for any student in "Delivering Web Reference Services to Young People." These are just a few of the resources available for homeschoolers, wheter beginners or experienced. Visit your Roswell Public Library for more information and ideas! DID YOU KNOW? If you’re having trouble sleeping a night, here are some unsuspected causes from the Sleep Disorders Clinic at New England Medical Center in Boston. Some over-the-counter pain relievers contain as much caffeine as coffee. One cup of coffee contains about 85 mg of caffeine. A two-table dose of Anacin contains 64 mg, and two tables of Extra Strength Excedrin contain 130 mg. Taking these near bedtime, or repeatedly during the day, may make sleep difficult. Prescription medicines can harm sleep, too. For example, taking a diuretic at bedtime may lead to repeated trips to the bathroom THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: "The tongue weighs practically nothing, but so few people can hold it."
