Welcome to Thanks For All the Gifts Week, a time to catch up on all of the thank you notes, birthday cards, graduation and wedding acknowledgements that you forgot to send this year! This is also National Aviation Week, celebrated on the anniversary of Orville Wright's birthday (1903), and National Resurrect Romance Week, which encourages everyone to find ways to be romantic every day this week by using their hearts and not their wallets! Today is National Relaxation Day, an excuse for all overworked and underpaid individuals to do what they would rather be doing! Friday is Bad Poetry Day, your opportunity to write some less than ideal verse! WHAT'S HAPPENING? At Wednesday's 10:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. story times, participants will hear a sampling of stories about mice, see a puppet play, wear a mouse mask, and make a stick puppet mouse. Saturday morning's 10:00 story time features bunnies, and participants will make bunny stick puppets. BOOK TALK Reference Librarian Loretta Clark presents this week's book information. The library's Southwest Collection contains many wonderful fiction and nonfiction books about New Mexico, including two new ones by local authors. The Lincoln County War is a notorious chapter in the history of New Mexico and the American West in general. In "A Murder In Lincoln County," Sheriff Pat Garrett walks the streets of Lincoln town in a mystery that takes place after the killing of Billy the Kid. The novel blends real and fictional characters, and real events revolve around a fictional murder. Author Stuart Pritchard brings history to life by including real events, such as John Chisum's actions against the outlaw gang stealing his cattle and murdering innocent people. Another new book about the Lincoln County War is "J.B. 'Billy' Mathews: The Biography of a Lincoln County Deputy." The chief deputy in command of the posse that shot down John Tunstall, the event that ignited the Lincoln County War, Mathews not only survived the war, but lived to die a natural death of old age. Author Elvis Fleming places the life of Mathews in the framework of the times, with only a few of the chapters related to the Lincoln County War. Cowboys have long inspired the imagination. "Enduring Cowboys: Life in the New Mexico Saddle" offers a glimpse into the lives of New Mexico's cowboys, representing a diversity of ethnic backgrounds and gender. They range from the historic Spanish vaqueros to former governor Bruce King, and each entry features photographs and informative text. All three of these books are sure to lure you back to the Southwest Collection, which is always a popular source of reading fun and information! DID YOU KNOW? According to researchers at Iowa State University, the most common cause of death by poisoning is carbon monoxide. More than 3,500 deaths in the United States every year are caused by the colorless, odorless, tasteless gas, which is a natural by-product of combustion. To protect yourself and those you love from this silent killer, open the garage door before starting the car, and idle the car in the garage for as short a time as possible. Have gas- or oil-burning appliances serviced annually to be sure they are not leaking carbon monoxide. Be sure to install carbon-monoxide detectors in your house. Costing as little as $20 each, they are valuable self-defense devices! THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: "No husband has ever been shot while doing the dishes." (unknown) JUDY ARMSTRONG, 624-7276
