Welcome to National Smile Week, which encourages us to "Share a smile and it will come back to you, bringing happiness to you and the giver." Today is the Date to Create, a day to unleash our creative potential to solve problems. Today is also Sneak Some Zucchini Onto Your Neighbors' Porch Night, to share the baskets of squash you have as a result of overzealous planting. You can make a wish upon hundreds of falling stars beginning Wednesday, during the Perseid Meteor Showers. Among the best-known and most spectacular meteor showers, the Perseids peak about August 10-12, when as many as 50-100 may be seen in a single night. Thursday is the anniversary of the Founding of the Smithsonian Institution in 1846, Sunday is the anniversary of the day in 1851 when Isaac Singer developed the sewing machine for use in homes, and Monday is the 65th anniversary of the Social Security Act. WHAT'S HAPPENING? At Wednesday morning's 10:00 story time, participants will read the longest book in the library, "A Flight of Butterflies"; talk with the Reverend Dr. George C. Odom, Jr. as he shows a collection of butterflies he captured on the Amazon; and take home parts to make a butterfly mobile. Wednesday's 3:30 p.m. story time features "Babar," a musical puppet show presented by Hannah Ginsberg and other members of the Roswell Symphony Guild, along with a take home elephant paper-bag puppet craft. Participants at Saturday morning's 10:00 story time will hear turtle stories and make a turtle craft. BOOK TALK Librarian Rosie Klopfer provides this week's book information. Need another project or an answer to a storage problem? Your Roswell Public Library has just what you're looking for! "Making Country Rustic Wood Projects," by Patrick Spielman, reveals professional secrets from a master woodworker on using different types of wood. Easy-to-follow instructions are backed up with drawings, close-up photos, and a metric equivalency chart to make this a fun book to use for ideas. You can add some country to your home with projects such as birdfeeders, weathervanes, shutters, furniture, and more. "Smart Shelving & Storage Solutions" contains 27 house and yard projects from Danny Proulx, who has been wood working for over thirty years. Storage projects include toy centers for all ages, a make-up desk and bench, dressers, and a Murphy-style fold down bed. "Bookcases: Outstanding Projects from America's Best Craftsmen," by Niall Barrett, covers all styles of bookcases from colonial, shaker, trapezoidal, and barrister. The drawings, photos, and detailed instructions make this a fun and easy project book to use. "Today's Home" and "Family Handyman" are two magazines that always include projects and solutions to make our household activities a little easier. DID YOU KNOW? If you want to take advantage of seasonal prices and preserve some of the summer's fresh berries to use in the fall and winter, try freezing them. Do not wash the berries before freezing, but do discard stems and blemished fruit. Freeze the berries in one layer on a try; then pour the frozen fruit into plastic bags or freezer containers. When you are ready to use the berries, rinse them under cool water to wash and defrost them. THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: "Never argue with an idiot. They drag you down to their level, then beat you with experience." (unknown) JUDY ARMSTRONG, 624-7276
