Today is the anniversary of the First Airplane Crossing of the English Channel, July 25, 1909. Louis Bleriot, after asking from the cockpit, "Where is England?" took off from Les Baraques, France, and landed near Dover, England, where he was first greeted by English police and customs officers. Thursday is Take Your Houseplants For a Walk Day. Sponsors say walking your plants around the neighborhood helps them to know their environment and makes them healthier. Sunday is the 65th anniversary of the day in 1935 when paperback books were introduced. Although books bound in soft covers were first introduced in Germany in 1841, the modern paperback revolution dates to the publication of the first Penguin paperback, "Ariel," a life of Shelley by Andre Maurois. Sunday is also Parents’ Day, which pays tribute to the men and women across our country whose devotion as parents strengthens our society and forms the foundation for a bright future for America. WHAT'S HAPPENING? At Wednesday's 10:00 a.m. Music story time, participants will learn about music and musical instruments with Larry Michelsohn and take home noisemakers. At Wednesday’s 3:30 p.m. story time, participants will learn about prehistoric man, ask Buck Wells about his display of arrowheads and spear points, talk with O.L. Adcock about making real bows for arrows, and make an arrow bookmark and a New Mexico map with a Pecos Valley Diamond. At Saturday morning’s 10:00 story time, participants will learn how to make simple papier mache objects and make a papier mache tray to take home. At Friday’s Fourth Friday Fun Adult Summer Reading Program, adults will learn how to construct papier mache objects from start to finish with Bert Clewell and Mary Stickford in a lecture and demonstration.
