Welcome to Meet a Mate Week, National Flag Week, National Little League Baseball Week, National Men’s Health Week, and National Hermit Week. Wednesday is Flag Day, which celebrates the anniversary of the day in 1777 when John Adams proposed the Stars and Stripes as the official flag of the United States. As part of the celebration, citizens across the country are asked to share a patriotic moment and Pause for the Pledge of Allegiance at 7:00 p.m., EDT.
Wednesday is also Family History Day, a reminder to share the stories, legends, and recollections that bind your family together at your family gatherings this summer.
Sunday is Father’s Day, which first was held in the state of Washington on June 19, 1910. Although publicly supported by President Calvin Coolidge in 1924, it did not become a public holiday until 1966. Sunday is also Family Awareness Day, a day to reflect on the important role of fathers in the American family, and National Splurge Day, so go out and do something indulgent and fun!
WHAT'S HAPPENING?
Wednesday's 10:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Father’s Day story times, participants will see a puppet play and make Dad a crown, nameplate, and "Do Not Disturb" sign. Saturday morning’s 10:00 story time celebrates Juneteenth with African-American folktales and balloon, pinwheel, and noisemaker crafts.
BOOK TALK
Children’s Librarian Mary Stickford provides this week's library information. With the heat of a dry Southwest summer upon us, you may be dreaming of cooler, more watery climes, perhaps with a touch of adventure. If so, try turning back the clock to yesteryear with tales of the valiant men and women of New England whaling ships in books from your Roswell Public Library.
A sampling of a dozen or so books includes "Hunting Neptune’s Giants, True Stories of American Whaling" and "Gone-A-Whaling, The Lure of the Sea and the Hunt for the Great Whale." Both offer photographs and diary excerpts of whalers, including accounts of an amazing number of women whalers. More details on women whalers are offered in "Seafaring Women." "Black Hands, White Sails: The Story of African-American Whalers" brings to light the little-known role of African-Americans in the whaling industry. Several of these titles refer to mutinies, such as "The Mutiny on the Globe," or about being cast adrift at sea after the sinking of ships by weather or attacks by whales. Whether your taste runs to diaries of voyages, such as "Logbook for Grace," which recounts a 1912 voyage aboard the ship "Daisy"; romanticized accounts, such as "The True Adventure of Daniel Hall," which tells of a boy of fourteen who deserted ship in Siberia; or the classic "Moby Dick" in book or video, you’ll find adventure awaits at the library!
DID YOU KNOW?
According to "Biblioholism, The Literary Addiction" by Rom Raabe, the Chinese scholar, Lin Hsun, would often read all night. To keep himself awake, he rigged up a "lighted twist of hemp arranged in such a way as to burn his hair if he began to nod from drowsiness." Another Chinese scholar, Sun Ching, tied his hair to a beam overhead to prevent him from dozing off!
