Welcome to National Headache Awareness Week, National Hug Holiday Week (make a difference one hug at a time!), and Small Business Week. Today is the anniversary of the day in 1872 when Susan Be. Anthony was arrested, tried, and sentenced to pay a fine for voting in a Rochester, NY, election. She refused to pay the fine and was allowed to go free by a judge who feared she would appeal to a higher court. Women did not receive the right to vote until 1920. Hard to believe, but Wednesday is the 25th anniversary of the day in 1975 when the Sony Corporation introduced the first videocassette recorder, the Betamax, which sold for $995. Eventually, another VCR format (VHS) proved more successful, and Sony stopped making the Betamax. Saturday is the anniversary of the day in 1943 when Laszlo Biro patented the ballpoint pen, which he had been developing since the 1930s. In many languages, the word for ballpoint pen is "biro." Saturday also marks the start of Take A Kid Fishing Weekend. WHAT'S HAPPENING? Wednesday's 10:00 a.m. story time features a fire truck, fire fighters, and a robot from the Roswell Fire Department in the south parking lot. At Wednesday afternoon’s 3:30 story time, participants can learn about the creatures of the Southwest from Ben Hanson of the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish and make a tarantula craft. Saturday’s 10:00 a.m. story time features fish tales and a water spouting fish craft. On June 6, the library hosts "Put a Pepper in the Pot Food Preparation and Safety" from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. You can get ready for the July 8th Chili Cook-Off with food safety tips presented by Ron Taylor, food specialist with the New Mexico Environment Department. BOOK TALK Librarian Mary Beth Wright provides this week's library information. Knit, purl, knit, purl - with these two stitches, anything can be knitted. Knitting is a lifelong gift not only to the knitter, but also to the ones receiving items as gifts. Maggie Righetti, a certified knitting and crocheting instructor, has written an easy-to-follow book for the novice, as well as the experienced knitter. "Knitting in Plain English" is a practical, solid how-to sourcebook. Martha Waterman’s "Traditional Knitted Lace Shawls" illustrates eight timeless shawl shapes and patterns for every taste and skill level. Because of their beauty and practicality, afghans appeal to just about everyone. "All-Time Great Afghans," from McCall’s Needlework and Crafts, features over 50 different patterns for you to choose from. For children of all ages, Kathy Dalmeny’s book, "World of Knitted Toys," has color photographs, clear instructions, and knitting techniques for two sizes of toys - "clutch" and "cuddle." Once you have decided to pick up those knitting needles, the library is a wonderful source of ideas! DID YOU KNOW? As we graduate the class of 2000, here is some information on the mindset of the Class of 2003, assembled by Beloit College. The Class of 2003 were mostly born in 1981. They are the first generation to be born into Pampers and Huggies. For them, John Lennon and John Belushi have always been dead. There has always been a woman on the Supreme Court, and women have always been traveling into space. They have never had to worry about the packaging of Tylenol, Yugoslavia never existed during their lifetimes, and they have probably never dialed a telephone! THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: "Before television, nobody knew what a headache looked like." (unknown) JUDY ARMSTRONG, 624-7276
