Thursday is also the beginning of International Volunteers Week, Nursing Assistants Week, and Stepparents’ Week. Friday is Yell "Fudge" At the Cobras in North America Day. Sponsors of this day theorize that fudge makes cobras gag and the mere mention of them causes the critters to skedaddle. Therefore, they ask everyone in North Americanto go outdoors at noon, local time, and yell, "Fudge."

WHAT'S HAPPENING?

Wednesday morning’s Cow story times will run from 10:00 a.m. to 10:30 and from 10:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., with half of the group watching a live cow being milked and learning about the dairy industry while the other half listens to stories about cows. The groups will switch at 10:30 so that everyone can enjoy both parts of the program. The cow will not be present at Wednesday’s 3:30 p.m. story time. Participants at Saturday morning’s 10:00 story time will learn sign language, play string games, make shadow figures, do hand rhymes and finger plays, and make a clap hands craft.

On June 6, the library hosts "Put a Pepper in the Pot Food Preparation and Safety" from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. You can get ready for the July 8th Chili Cook-Off with food safety tips presented by Ron Taylor, food specialist with the New Mexico Environment Department. Permits and registration forms are available at the library.

BOOK TALK

The library has added a fascinating and informative book called "Catastrophe" by David Keys. The author has traced the effects of a tremendous volcanic eruption that took place in A.D. 535 and drastically changed the weather patterns all over the world. According to the author, the results were more than drought, flood, and famine; the bubonic plague erupted and spread from Africa to Europe, wiping out entire populations. In a matter of decades, the old forms of government and society were replaced with a new order, not only in Europe but also in every continent on the planet. David Keys has copiously illustrated these changes with charts of the weather patterns in each area of the world, as well as timelines that follow the changes in each society’s development or collapse. For a similar topic, you might try "Floods, Famines, and Emperors" by Brian Fagan, which explores El Nino as a force in history. Fagan is an archaeologist who has traced the collapse of dynasties and rulers around the world as a result of short-term climate changes caused by El Nino. These and other books are great reading for history buffs and those interested in learning how weather shapes our human world.
