BOOK TALK

Librarian Rosie Klopfer provides this week's book information. Some of the magazines in the Children’s Area of the library can be interesting and helpful to users of all ages. "Acorn - Early Years Storyteller" is published four times a year. It usually has a central theme for each issue. Each issue usually includes bulletin board patterns, mobile art, masks, awards, newsletters, and bookmarks. The patterns are ready to copy for classroom or family activities.

"Copy Cat - Ideas & Activities for K-3 Teachers" is published five times a year. Each issue contains a pullout calendar, creative ideas and activities, along with instructions and patterns for related crafts and games. "Kid Discover" is a science magazine that contains excellent photographs and helpful bibliographies. Old issues of this magazine are recycled by subject into the library’s Vertical File.

"Contact Kids" is published by the Children’s Television Workshop ten times a year and features articles, mind games, contests, and answers to questions that have child appeal. "Kid City," also published by the Children’s Television Workshop ten times a year, offers stories, activities, puzzles, games, and drawings.

DID YOU KNOW?

According to an article in "Women’s Health Letter," coleslaw helps fight cancer. Its main ingredient, cabbage, is high in cancer-fighting chemicals called glucosinolates. The chemicals are water-soluble - up to 50% may be lost when cabbage is boiled. However, when cabbage is chopped raw, as in coleslaw, some beneficial chemicals increase as much as 400%. A possible reason is that cutting the plant may trigger the production of more of these substances.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: "A conscience is what hurts when all your other parts feel good." (unknown)
