April has arrived, bringing with it Holy Humor Month, International Amateur Radio Month, International Customer Loyalty Month, International Daffynitions Month, International Legacy Month, International Work Life Enrichment Month, Keep America Beautiful Month, Mathematics Education Month, National Humor Month, National Lawn and Garden Month, National Pecan Month, National Pet First Aid Awareness Month, National Poetry Month, Spring Ahead for Life Month, Straw Hat Month, and Worldwide Innovation Month! As if that isn’t enough to keep you busy, this is Golden Rule Week, which reminds us of the importance of the Golden Rule in making this a better world in which to live. You’ll need to practice the Golden Rule for sure as you celebrate National Reading A Road Map Week! National Volunteer Week runs from April 9 to April 15. Thursday is National Fun At Work Day. Including a little laughter in your workday will boost morale and improve the bottom line! Friday is No Housework Day - no trash, no dishes, no making of beds or washing of laundry, and no guilt! Monday is National Siblings’ Day, which honors all brothers and sisters. WHAT'S HAPPENING? Wednesday's 10:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. "numbers’ story times feature stories, songs, and a counting board craft. At Saturday morning’s 10:00 story time, children will observe Astronomy Day by making a star mobile and constellations. BOOK TALK Librarian Loretta Clark provides this week's library information. In honor of National Volunteer Week, the 28 volunteers who enrich the Roswell Public Library’s productivity will be honored at a reception on April 11. In addition, the eight volunteers who have contributed 100 or more hours of time and talent will have a book dedicated in their honor and placed in the library’s collection. The volunteers and the books added in their honor are listed below. Bert Clewell is creating a papier mache penguin to be added to the library’s "menagerie," and the book for this creative volunteer is "Mammals of North America." Spence Devitt waters the various plants in the library and will be honored with "American Greats." Barbara Dickenson, who checks donated books against the library holdings for materials to be added to the collection and is also in charge of the library scrap book, will be honored with "Norman Rockwell: Pictures for the American People." Ray Phelps places books on the carts to be shelved and will be honored with "Archipelago: The Island of Indonesia." "National Geographic Photographs: The Milestones" will honor Flossie Stubbs, who prepares craft materials to be used in the children’s story times. Dixie Summersgill places the protective covering on books that are being added to the library collection and will be honored with "Art, The Critics’ Choice: 150 Masterpieces of Western Art." "The Saga of Lewis and Clark Into the Uncharted West" will recognize Joan Young, who checks the recommended lists of books against the library’s holdings to aid in purchasing new library materials. Jan West helps pull books requested by teachers and will be honored with "Majestic Universe: Views From Here to Infinity." DID YOU KNOW? Patrons with little or no vision now have a new way to hear pages from a book or other typewritten documents with the library’s new "Open Book" software program that turns a scanner, PC, and sound card into a full-featured reading machine. After the page has been scanned, the words will appear on the screen, and each word will be highlighted as it is spoken. Patrons may select the voice rate, volume, pitch, and tone of the voice. For patrons with low vision, the size of the print can be increased from 25% up to 500%. THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: "You know you’re overworked when you start arguing with recorded messages."
