Welcome to Read Me Week, when national and local celebrities and other volunteers read in classrooms across the United States. In conjunction with this week, Thursday is Read Across America Day (celebrated on Dr. Seuss's birthday), when all children are encouraged to read a book before they go to bed.

Today is Leap Year Day, the day we add to our calendar every four years (except for century years which are not exactly divisible by 400), to bring our calendar more nearly into accord with the seasons.  Traditionally, leap year is a time during which women may propose to men, and today is, indeed, Bachelors Day, a day of supposed immunity for unmarried men during leap year.

Tomorrow, March begins, a month that traditionally roars in like a lion and exits like a lamb, or vice versa.  March brings with it American Red Cross Month, Bible Women Awareness Month, Ethics Awareness Month, Humorists Are Artists Month (HAAM), International Mirth Month, International Listening Awareness Month, Music In Our Schools Month, National Craft Month, National Frozen Food Month, National Nutrition Month, National "On-Hold" Month, National Sauce Month, National Umbrella Month, National Women's History Month, National Play the Recorder Month, Youth Art Month, and National Optimism Month!

Wednesday is the beginning of Return the Borrowed Books Week and National Write A Letter of Appreciation Week, a time to send a letter expressing your gratitude to those who have been good to you or been a positive influence.  Wednesday is also Stop Bad Service Day, so remember to thank your favorite companies for offering a superior level of service.

WHAT'S HAPPENING?

At Wednesday's 10:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. story times, children will observe National Day with tell-and-draw stories and by making a paper bag pig puppet.  There will be no Saturday morning storytime because of the Altrusa Club/Friends of the Library Book Sale, which starts on Friday night from 6:00 to 8:00.  Admission to Friday night's preview is $2 and free for members of the Friends.

Saturday, the sale continues from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m., and admission is free to everyone.  Books will be sold by the inch.  Don't miss this first great book sale of the new millennium!

BOOK TALK

Librarian Rosie Klopfer provides this week's book information.  "The Complete Photo Guide to Home Repair" by Black and Decker will help you to keep your New Year's resolution or make your "honey-do-list" disappear.  The 2,000 color "how-to" photos and step-by-step instructions will convert even the novice into an expert.  This great book is organized in four sections, with the introduction as a guide to safety, tools, maintenance, repair tips, and storage.  The book's remaining sections provide information on Interior Repairs (emergency and long-term prevention), Exterior Repairs (everything from chimneys to concrete driveways), and Systems Repairs (plumbing, electric, and everything in between).

If your home is in need of more extensive repairs, Bob Vila's "Complete Guide to Remodeling Your Home" is everything you need to know about home renovation from the number one improvement expert.  Easy to understand directions guide your project through design, style, and living space while minimizing stress to you and your pocketbook.

DID YOU KNOW?

Here are a couple of tips from "The Complete Photo Guide to Home Repair".  Did you know that salad oil safely cleans your hands when using oil-based paints and stains, without hazardous irritants?  Or did you know that you can prevent children from playing with power tools by inserting spring metal key rings through the small holes in the prongs of the plugs?

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK:  "If you live to be a hundred, I want to live to be a hundred minus one day so I never have to live without you.  (Winnie the Pooh)
