February is here, bringing with it American Heart Month, Black History Month, Celebration of Chocolate Month, February is Berry Fresh in the Sunshine State Month, International Boost Self-Esteem Month, International Embroidery Month, International Expect Success Month, Library Lovers' Month, National Cherry Month, National Snack Food Month, National Weddings Month, Plant the Seeds of Greatness Month, and Return Shopping Carts to the Supermarket Month. Today is Robinson Crusoe Day, the anniversary of the rescue of Scottish sailor Alexander Selkirk in 1709. His adventures living on the uninhabited island of Juan Fernandez for five years formed the basis of Daniel Defoe's book. Wednesday is Groundhog Day, so if Punxsutawney Phil seeks his shadow when he emerges on this day, six weeks of winter will ensue. Thursday is the anniversary of the ratification of the 16th Amendment in 1913, which granted Congress the authority to levy taxes on income. According to "Chase's Calendar of Events," "church bells did not ring throughout the land, and no dancing in the streets was reported" on this day. Sunday is Pay-A-Compliment Day, so make someone feel a little happier by paying a compliment to family, co-workers, or strangers you encounter! WHAT'S HAPPENING? At Wednesday's 10:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. story times, children will observe International Self-Esteem Month by decorating a crown and an award shaped picture frame. Saturday morning's 10:00 story time celebrates the Chinese New Year with stories, activities, and a "make a dragon" craft. As the year 2000 begins, the Roswell Public Library is taking time to remember the past and the events that have made an impact throughout Roswell's history. Don't forget to stop by the library and vote for the events you consider to be the most significant. Ballots may be returned to the library anytime before February 15. BOOK TALK Information abounds in the library. It is stuffed into books, magazines, newspapers, and computers. In fact, there is so much information everywhere that sometimes children and their parents have a difficult time quickly locating specific facts and figures. The Children's Department has just added two more new books that may be an answer to your need for fast facts. One is the "World Almanac For Kids." It is filled with facts on topics that are as wide ranging as pop stars and geology. The second book is the "Scholastic Kids' Almanac For the 21st Century." Hundreds of full-color graphics, tables, and charts help children (and adults) to understand and visualize the information on each page. The contents are arranged alphabetically, and each entry begins with importantdates, notable figures in the field, and key ideas concerning each topic. These and the many other great books at the library will appeal to children and adults of all ages! DID YOU KNOW? Audio books are becoming more and more popular. Here are the results of a research study, recently sponsored by The Audio Publishers Association, on the habits and practices of audio book listeners. Twenty-one percent of 19 million US households have listened to an audio book in the past year. Of those, 44% listened in the car, 37% at home, 8% while exercising, 4% at work, 4% at school, and 3% other places. Approximately 7,000 new audio books were produced last year. And just what type of audio books do people listen to: 48% book-based fiction (30% of which was unabridged fiction); 21% nonfiction; 15% children's; 8% religious/inspirational; 6% other; and 2% language.
